25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020
8. Jeff Hardy’s ‘Intoxicated Car Crash’
Hey, remember when Jeff Hardy's very real substance abuse issues became a storyline on WWE TV for no particular reason in 2020? That was some laugh, eh? After all, who wouldn't want to see a popular babyface with high-profile problems away from the ring bring those to the storyline realm?
On the 29 May episode of SmackDown, a seemingly intoxicated Jeff crashed his rental car into Elias out in the parking lot. Sheamus had set the whole thing up somehow, which was never properly explained. How had he managed that?! Nobody wanted to answer that question, but Elias was said to have broken ribs, and fake cops arrested Hardy for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Jeff has been through a lot of substance abuse woes over the years, so this angle wasn’t welcome and blurred the lines between fantasy and reality a little too hard. Whomever convinced Hardy that this would be a good look for him needed to be stopped. Plus, it didn't make sense that Eli was positioned as the heel for being mad at Jeff for almost killing him when he was on his way to work.
Eek! Wrestling should just steer clear of this stuff. It didn't work with Hawk in LOD, it didn't work with Scott Hall over in WCW, and it didn't work here with the 'Charismatic Enigma' in 2020. Somehow, the creative team saw this angle play out and thought serving up more of it (albeit with a "comedy" twist) was the best thing to do next.
