Following plenty of rumblings, Goldberg has reiterated that he'll be having a retirement match in WWE before the year is up.

Speaking to My San Antonio, Da Man discussed the training he's been doing for this swansong, with Bill training at the Black Diamond Martial Arts gym and even doing some work with Brendan O'Reilly, a mixed martial artist who spent a couple of years competing in the UFC between 2014 and 2016.

On that retirement match, Goldberg said:

"I am training for my retirement match with the WWE, [to be] held at some point prior to the end of 2025. I do not know who, when, or where I'm wrestling."

The last time the 58-year-old former WCW World Champion laced up his boots was September 2022, when he faced Roman Reigns in Saudi Arabia.

Goldberg himself has talked about how he wasn't in the best of shape for that Roman match, with Bill only agreeing to do the match at relatively short notice due to Vince McMahon promising him a proper retirement bout down the line. That "down the line" never came under McMahon's watch, though, but Goldberg will now finally get a formal send-off under the WWE stewardship of Triple H.

Who's Next?

Of course, when talking about one final match for Bill Goldberg, one has to then look at who could be the opponent for this retirement contest. For many fans, two particular wrestlers stand out from the pack as no-brainer suggestions: Bron Breakker and Gunther.

In the case of Bron Breakker, his spear has often been compared to Goldberg's, although some might say Bron's spear even tops Goldberg's. On top of that, there is plenty of history between Goldberg and the Steiners, with Breakker being the son of Rick Steiner and the nephew of Scott Steiner. In fact, Goldberg vs. Big Poppa Pump at Fall Brawl 2000 is often cited as Bill's greatest ever match... even if a Vince Russo run-in threatened to derail things.

As for Gunther, he and Goldberg have already interacted on WWE TV, with the Ring General poking fun at the WWE Hall of Famer and even questioning his parenting skills when Raw stopped by Atlanta, Georgia last October. The two were ultimately kept apart by security and WWE officials, but the seeds were certainly sown for Gunther and Goldberg to collide at some point in the future. Given that Gunther simply doesn't have bad matches, he would be an ideal candidate to get the best possible match out of Goldberg for the veteran's last dance.

That My San Antonio story did suggest there might be some sort of announcement from Goldberg in May about who's next, so it may well be that we'll have a more solid idea of Goldberg's retirement match in a few weeks.
