Ranking Every WWE WrestleMania Main Event - From Worst To Best
32. The Rock vs John Cena (WrestleMania 29)
Having recorded the highest PPV buy rate in WrestleMania history the year before, WWE decided to run The Rock vs John Cena as the main event of 'The Grandaddy Of Them All' for a second year running. That they'd given the previous year's match the tagline of 'Once In A Lifetime' is something we were supposed to all conveniently forget because this is the WWE and they'll do what they want and we'll bloody well like it.
This failed on two parts. The first was that CM Punk's superb 434 day WWE Championship reign had come to an end, leaving WWE's core audience feeling cheated of the company's standout performer finally getting his shot at the man event of WrestleMania. Secondly, did anybody really believe that The Rock was going to retain his title and stick around beyond WrestleMania season after finally establishing himself as one of Hollywood's leading men?
As if all of this wasn't enough of an uphill struggle for Cena and The Rock, Dwayne suffered an injury early in the match that meant that it was a far more cumbersome and lackluster than their match the previous year. Where their WrestleMania 28 battle felt personal and unpredictable, Cena's victory in this mediocre match felt limp by comparison.
