Darkseid is, for all his silly outfits and cartoonish zig-zag eye beams, a truly powerful force in the world of DC Comics. And while he has been a formidable presence on a good many comic covers in his time, it has always portrayed him in the heat of war or commanding his army of feral Parademons, or some other equally cataclysmic scenario. Mister Miracle #10, however, spotlighted Darkseid in a completely different light.
Part chalk drawing, part X-Ray photograph and part film negative, this cover is one of the most unconventional on this list. The line art, white shading and red eyes paint an unsettling and indescribably uncomfortable portrait of one of DCs greatest villains, and one of the most memorable comic book covers of the year.
