It's hard to say whether Arkham Asylum is truly a Batman story because, at its heart, it's an unnerving tale about the asylum that houses his greatest villains, and this ambiguity is reflected in Dave McKean's stunning cover art. With a softened approach to highlight each eccentricity, the unhinged eyes and vampiric teeth of a reinvented Joker loom over the building as Batman, barely a footnote of this twisted masterpiece, enters through the door.
