Batman returned from the dead and decided the best way to handle Gotham City was to essentially franchise the concept of Batman to a wider group of superheroes, which became known as Batman Inc.
The costume Bruce wore throughout the series (up until the New 52) was similar in many ways to the one he wore back in the thirties, but instead featured grey trunks, a yellow circle behind the bat-symbol, and sleeker gloves and boots.
