10 A-List Actors Who Did Z-Grade Horror Films
8. Jennifer Aniston - Leprechaun
Hard to believe now, but Leprechaun began life as a kids’ movie, hence the choice of Mark Jones, a former story consultant on The Scooby and Scrappy Doo Puppy Hour, as director. He must’ve stuck to what he knew because in terms of logic, storytelling and scares, Leprechaun is right up there with Scooby’s greatest hits.
The movie’s token female, Jennifer Aniston gets the Daphne Blake role (shrill and annoying, screams a lot for no reason, suspiciously danger prone etc) which naturally requires her to be partnered with a square-jawed would-be hunk whose unfunny friends provide “comic relief.” Every supporting character is a one-dimensional clown who gets five minutes of screen time – tops – before being killed by Warwick Davis as he searches for his gold.
It’s the kind of feature that lends itself to franchising because the eponymous creature (who rides a tricycle like Billy the puppet in Saw) is waaay more interesting than anyone else onscreen. In her first theatrical feature, Aniston's the spoiled rich girl who complains about the lack of cable and shopping malls before being chased around by a Leprechaun. Which was invaluable training for Friends, I’m sure.
