The world was shocked last year when it was announced that Johnny Depp had departed the Fantastic Beasts franchise, agreeing to quit the role of villain Grindelwald after losing a domestic abuse libel case against UK newspaper The Sun.

The background to Depp's dismissal revolves around his acrimonious marriage to actress Amber Heard, the particulars of which are still being decided in court.

Heard's allegations of abuse against Depp are ultimately what led to The Sun labelling him a "wife beater," and following the libel outcome being asked by Warner Bros. to step down from Fantastic Beasts. However, Depp has also levelled similar allegations of abuse against Heard.

The pair will go to trial over their respective grievances next April, while the third Fantastic Beasts film recently wrapped principal photography with Mads Mikkelsen playing a reimagined version of Grindelwald.

Despite Mikkelsen's obvious talents, the vocal outcry from Depp's fans was substantial, circulating a petition requesting that Warner Bros. reinstate the actor given that he's never actually been convicted of domestic abuse.

Unsurprisingly that hasn't happened, and it remains to be seen what will become of Depp's career in the years to come. Heard, for her part, is currently shooting her role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
