4. Starry Eyes
The price of fame and the bizarre cult of celebrity are the subject of Starry Eyes, which hit UK DVD earlier this year. It's a macabre journey into the world of Hollywood, in which everyone is determined to make it big and where stabbing your friend in the back for an audition is no big deal. Innocent actor Sarah, played by Alex Essoe, is our way into this world, as she is offered the opportunity to try out for the lead role in a horror movie made by a studio with a reputation for success. After a few normal, if unnerving, auditions, the film takes a disarming journey into the macabre when an indecent proposal sets into motion a shocking spree of violence and icky body horror of the kind that would please David Cronenberg. The third act of Starry Eyes is a heart-stoppingly brutal thrill ride that never eases its foot of the gas in its allegorical treatment of the lengths people will go to in order to achieve their Hollywood dream. Starry Eyes is not for the faint of heart, but for those with strong stomachs, it's an engrossing horror film with real brains, excellent gore effects and a mesmerising central performance from Essoe, who deserves a much easier path to stardom than the one her character travels in this film.
