Bridge Of Spies is another film you'd not necessarily expect to see pop culture references in, given the subject matter, but Spielberg is the kind of film-maker who likes to show reference points. So he'll often drop in homages to films that inspired his own work subtly or reuse entire shots, and sometimes he likes to celebrate the work of his stars.

Since he's worked with Tom Hanks so much, he obviously knows the great man well, so he includes a nod in Bridge Of Spies to another Hanks movie - The Green Mile.

In Bridge of Spies, during the diner scene, Hanks' James B. Donovan says "Every man deserves a defense," which feels very much like a nod to the line Gary Sinise says of John Coffey in The Green Mile: "Everyone is entitled to a defense."
