10 Best Films Made From Black List Screenplays

1. Zombieland

in bruges
Columbia Pictures

Although it didn’t appear on the Black List until 2007, Zombieland actually started out life back in 2005 as a spec for a TV pilot penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick who would go on to write Deadpool’s screenplay a few years later.

Zombieland’s director Ruben Fleischer helped flesh the script out into a full movie, resulting in one of the best zombie comedies in recent memory with all the ingredients a good comedy horror should have – laughs, gore and just the right amount of heart.

Funnily enough, even though Bill Murray was Reese and Wernick’s ideal choice for Zombieland’s celebrity cameo they didn’t dare pen him into the original script knowing what an elusive beast the actor is.

Early drafts of the script featured Patrick Swayze until the actor got ill, while later cameos featured Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Pesci and Mark Hamill. But thank god they did manage to snare Bill Murray because it’s one of the best parts of the movie, if not THE best.
