7. Frankenstein's Monster - Frankenstein (1931)

Frankenstein's monster was created in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and brought to our screens for the first time, and probably the best time, in 1931. The monster made up of parts of different people just looked hideous and very scary to begin with. He was half frightening because of his appearance and random violence but also a creature of pity too because of his innocence and desire to please. Nevertheless the monster commits murders like strangling Frankenstein's old medical professor Dr Waldstein and throwing a little girl in a lake (he thinks she will float like the flowers). However we must see these deaths as 'accidents'. The monster is only acting according to his environment. The only time he gets homocidal is against Frankenstein whom he instinctively knows has created him as a hideous figure who simply cannot live in the world. Nevertheless, if you woke up in the middle of the night and found 1931 era Frankenstein at the end of your bed - you would probably scream and freak out rather than offer him a McVities Digestive Biscuit and a mug of Ovaltine.
