6. Noah Baumbach (Highball)
Noah Baumbach's feature directorial career got off to a great start with 1995's Kicking and Screaming, and though this early momentum did eventually propel him to bigger and better places (such as his handful of Oscar nods for the fantastic Marriage Story), he immediately hit a bump in the road with his followup project.
That project was Highball, a truly bizarre effort (with, as you can see above, a truly bizarre poster) that proved so troublesome to make that Baumbach didn't even finish it.
Dubbing the film a "foolish experiment", Baumbach's intent was to shoot Highball in just six days, using the same people that he'd already gathered for his other 1997 movie - one that he actually finished - Mr. Jealousy.
Instead, the production ran out of money, Baumbach jumped ship, and somebody else finished it, which has led to Baumbach disowning the project in the years since:
“It really was an experiment, and kind of a foolish experiment, because I didn't think about what the ramifications would be if it didn't work. And it was a funny script. But it was just too ambitious. We didn't have enough time, we didn't finish it, it didn't look good, it was just a whole… mess.“
Surprise surprise, making movies - even small ones - is bloody difficult.
