Name a more iconic duo than filmmaker Sam Levinson and self-conscious edginess, but before he became a household name with HBO's Euphoria, he wrote and directed 2018's black comedy thriller Assassination Nation.

Set in the American town of Salem, the film follows a group of four high school girls coping with the aftermath of a town-wide data hack which exposes the secrets of many of its most prominent citizens.

All hell breaks loose as Salem's residents seek violent revenge on those revealed to have wronged them through the hack, all while the identity of the hacker, known only by their username "Er0str4tus," remains under wraps.

At the very end of the film, however, we learn that the culprit was protagonist Lily's (Odessa Young) younger brother Donny (Caden Swain), a seemingly insignificant character glimpsed only briefly throughout the movie.

But the real kicker comes when the police question Donny in the final scene and ask why he carried out the hack. His answer? "For the lulz."

For many already on the fence about the whole experience, it was an obnoxious enough punch-line to send them over the edge into white-hot hatred. Never change, Sam.
