10 Great Films That Already Flew Under The Radar In 2016
1. Keanu
The first part of 2016 saw some truly awful attempts at comedy, with films like Dirty Grandpa and 50 Shades Of Black getting more attention than this original and constantly entertaining buddy film. Granted, they were getting attention for all the wrong reasons, though those complaining about a lack of laughs this year simply didn't look far enough.
Peter Atencio's action comedy co-stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as cousins who end up entangled in a web of criminal activity thanks to an adorable kitten named Keanu. When the kitten is stolen, the duo take on the identities of two notorious gangsters, hoping to track down the thief and the missing kitty.
Keanu Reeves, who was initially unaware of the production, contacted the filmmakers and offered his services in the form of a voice-over when he became aware of it. Atencio arranged for an extra scene to be shot, a dream sequence in which Keanu (in the voice of Reeves) addresses Peele directly.
It is one of many genuinely funny scenes in a surprisingly great movie - the affection between the on-screen buddies is palpable throughout as they work from a script full of fresh gags. As well as showcasing the talents of Peele and Key, Keanu proves that there is no age limit on the buddy comedy if done correctly.
