10 Greatest Directorial Debuts Of All Time

6. Joel & Ethan Coen, Blood Simple

Although (For DGA Credit Reasons) Blood Simple is credited to director Joel Coen, we all know that both Coen brothers have been equally directing their work since this 1984 debut. Set in the sweaty backdrop of Texas, the Coen's directorial debut is still a marvel all these years later. Elements of film noir, beautiful stark cinematography and dark humor are abound in this deep fried tale of murder, money and double crosses, all of which have become staples of the modern day Coen film. The confidence and mastery of their craft is seen throughout Blood Simple, with the standouts being a tumultuous highway scene involving the disposal of a dead body and the film's climactic shootout. The Coen brothers made their mark loud and clear that they were a voice to be reckoned with in cinema and now, 4 Oscars and countless classics (Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, No Country For Old Men to name a few) later, the Coen brothers are still the best and only "Two Headed Director" working today.
