10 Greatest Prequel Movies Of All-Time

7. Monsters University (2013)

Monsters University is proof that a relatively unnecessary prequel can still make for a worthwhile film. Pixar's first prequel movie doesn't add anything to the series, per se, but it does very little to mess with the original flick. Given that it's an entertaining flight in its own right and doesn't screw with your memories of the original classic... well, why the hell not, right?

The action here picks up several years before Mike and Sully begin their jobs at Monsters Incorporated, as the pair enrol in the prestigious establishment of the title; the twist is that they don't get along at first, and the film - a sort of campus comedy - charts how they transition from worst enemies to the best of friends.

The story plays out on a much smaller scale, in which the biggest threat that the characters face is that they'll be thrown out of school - presumably this was done on purpose, however, as to not upstage the adventure Mike and Sully find themselves caught up in in later life.

Still, Monsters University is a lovely film that, despite not reaching the heights of its predecessor, justifies its existence on account of sheer enthusiasm. Whereas so many prequels get it wrong in trying too hard, this one is content to tell a smaller, more personal story. It pays offs.
