7. Salo (1975)

A special treat for the eyes by revered Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini, he was murdered in shady circumstances a short while after completing this transgressive masterpiece. Not one for the casual viewer, you need to know what you are getting into when you approach Salo. Four wealthy and corrupt libertines hole up in a mansion in Salo during the dying days of the fascist Mussolini reign in Italy. They bring with them talkative prostitutes, their own daughters, kidnapped children and other assorted deviants. The libertines indulge their basest urges throughout the film which incorporates a heck of a lot of poop eating, casual torture and murder. The poop eating scenes are very gruelling to watch - and it is this paraphilia that the film is notorious for. It is a cold film, with not a jot of human tenderness. Life is cheap in Salo and people are regularly tortured, raped and murdered in the most horrible way. I'm sure the film is a glaring indictment of fascism but this relevance is lost among all the coprophagy. I don't think you could ever 'enjoy' Salo, but you could admire Pasolini's chutzpah in producing such a foul film.
