10 Horror Movie Sequels That Were Just Too Cruel

9. Saw III

The Descent Part 2
Lionsgate

Though the Saw franchise has often been tarred with the same torture porn brush as Hostel, the series started off decidedly more restrained. Truthfully, it wasn't until Saw III that the filmmakers truly started to push the brutality to nauseating levels.

Saw III famously introduced the gnarliest trap in the series up to that point - The Rack, where poor Timothy (Mpho Koaho) has his limbs and neck twisted by a machine until dead.

But more than that, Saw III also marked the point at which a number of unwinnable or at least unfair traps were introduced, as engineered by Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith).

Detective Kerry (Dina Meyer), a fan favourite character who many felt might be the one to take down Jigsaw and Amanda, is instead hastily killed off early in the movie when placed in a literally unbeatable trap. And then there's the movie's protagonist, Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), who quite reasonably very pissed off at Jigsaw for placing him in this situation, slices Kramer's throat with a power saw, causing him to "lose" his final test.

Jeff's penalty? His wife Lynn's (Bahar Soomekh) head is blown off when Jigsaw flatlines and their kidnapped daughter is locked away within the warehouse.

And because that's not harsh enough, Saw IV reveals that Jeff never even made it out of the warehouse - he was shot dead by Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson), who simply saw him waving a gun around and believed him to be a threat.
