When most people think of Hell and elevators together, they'll probably just imagine being stuck in one with someone who had a heavy lunch. In 2010's Devil, which was directed by John Erick Dowdle and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, bad farts are the least of the protagonists' problems.

A group of five people end up trapped in an elevator, unable to escape. Rescuers working to free the passengers are stumped as how this could have happened, but all is revealed when one of them sees the face of Satan on the security camera. It is later discovered that the trapped victims have all committed a horrible sin and their souls are being harvested by the title character.

The elevator serves as a pretty on-the-nose metaphor for some kind of purgatory, where the condemned wait for their judgement. As well as the struggles of the five prisoners, there's also drama on the outside, as the rescuers are divided into two groups - those who believe in the Devil and those who don't.

A unique take on Hell, Devil will make sure you always take the stairs going forward.
