Sometimes, dead is better.

There are few concepts in fiction more petrifying than becoming a zombie. Once bitten, there is next to nothing that can be done to avoid turning into a flesh-eating ghoul.

Worst of all, the transition can take hours or days, with the victim fully aware what fate has in store for them. Since there are plenty of warnings when a person is about to join the undead, the rest of the characters in any given movie should be able to anticipate things.

But as has been established in 10 Most Unexpected Transformations In Zombie Movies, that's rarely the case. Watching a sweet old lady, a beloved hero, an innocent child, or an adorable animal mutate into a brain-craving revenant is something no-one is truly ready for.

The zombie transformation can be so nightmarishly grotesque, even those who should see it coming a mile away are often caught off-guard. And if the audience doesn't know who's been infected, it throws everybody off when one of the characters suddenly turns and wolfs down a whole chunk of someone's face.

Although there have been plenty of truly terrifying zombies over the years, nobody was prepared for the following shocking transformations.

10. Tyrant - Resident Evil: Extinction

Resident Evil: Extinction has Alice once again trying to take down Umbrella's head scientist, Dr. Alexander Isaacs, who intends to turn humanity into zombies for... reasons.

After Isaacs becomes infected, he takes a huge dose of the anti-virus, hoping to cure himself. Instead, Isaacs makes the virus stronger, causing him to mutate into a super-zombie. So, when he's shot "dead" by his co-worker, it's not a surprise when Isaacs' back on his feet a few seconds later.

However, Isaac's next mutation is a bit unexpected. Transforming his hand into a bunch of slithering tentacles, the scientist launches his new appendage at his co-worker, burrowing into his eyes and mouth. Pretty creepy, but Isaacs is far from finished. By the time Alice arrives in his lair, the villainous virologist has transformed into Tyrant, the final boss from the first Resident Evil game.

Although the Resident Evil movies are more miss than hit, seeing Tyrant in live-action was a great bit of fan-service. Even those unfamiliar with the video games should appreciate Tyrant's design, since the nasty creature was brought to life with elaborate prosthetics rather than excessive CGI.
