6. The Village

the fog movie
Touchstone Pictures

Attention fans of Unbreakable and Signs: you’re the ones who equipped M Night Shyamalan with a bulletproof ego and told him he could do no wrong. The Village is all your fault.

In order to maintain the illusion that they’re living in the Nineteenth Century, which they do for….oh….some reason, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Brendan Gleeson dress up as “those we don’t speak of” in order to keep the children from venturing into “the towns” (the normal world). When Joaquin Phoenix is stabbed by village irregular Adrien Brody, someone needs to make the journey to fetch medical supplies so….they send the blind girl. Cue scenes of Bryce Dallas Howard wandering through the woods with her white stick while Hurt, Weaver and Gleeson continue speaking in the language of the time, even as Phoenix bleeds to death.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the scene where Howard arrives in the modern world, because it’s basically the same moment from Blazing Saddles, only played straight – which of course makes it hilarious.
