10 Most Ridiculous Monster Movies Of All Time
5. The Incredible Melting Man (1977)
After passing through "the rings of Saturn" (or their stock footage equivalent), astronaut Steve West (Alex Rebar) returns to Earth and, for no reason that's ever made clear, starts to slowly break down into an icky mess. The excellent melting effects are by Rick Baker and they're the biggest draw in a movie that's more often than not as messy as its protagonist.
Originally conceived as a comedy, most of the picture was in the can when the producers decided the film would make more money as a straight horror film, so scenes that were supposed to be funny (such as when West terrorizes a group of chain-smoking 10-year-olds) are here presented with a straight face. The film's never remotely scary, just bizarre.
Eventually, the hunt for our hero leads to an industrial plant where West dissolves into a mess that's swept away by a bored janitor. "How can a serious horror movie end with the monster being shoveled into a garbage can?" asks director William Sachs.
