10 Movies Doomed From The Start

1. Cats

You don't need me, or anyone really, to tell you how bad Cats is. A mere five years after its release, Cats has already cemented itself in cinematic infamy, an all-time great disaster on the same level as David Lynch's Dune.

And Universal was convinced that this could take on Star Wars on opening Christmas Day weekend.

You would think that the Star Wars movie in question being the almost-as-infamous The Rise of Skywalker would give Cats a fighting chance, but no! Honestly, the fact that Episode IX is... the way that it is, just makes the fact that it still kicked Cats' butt up and down Hollywood blvd. all the funnier. This was the only way it was ever going to end.

What makes Cats such a fascinating failure is that behind-the-scenes stories frequently allege hubristic arrogance on the part of director Tom Hooper. His apparent mistreatment of the film's VFX team, his ostensible underlying contempt for musical theater as a genre, and his claimed need to remove the "fantastical" elements from Cats. All of it culminated in a film that was so bad, that you could see its failure from the first minute of that original teaser trailer.
