10 Movies That Used Insane Gimmicks To Get Attention
5. Clue Features Three Different Possible Outcomes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDDdeHtrxfASpeaking of endings, this was a pretty genius and more modern example of that which made audiences never quite sure which conclusion they were going to get. The mystery/comedy Clue was based on a board game where the killer is different every time you play it, so why shouldn't that be true of the movie as well? The idea was that three endings would be filmed, each one revealing a different killer, and the ending that was screened depended on which theatre you went to.
So if you had a friend who saw the movie at another theatre you would have both experienced two different films. How cool is that? Some theatres would announce ahead of time which ending they had, but doesn't that spoil the whole fun? Still, this was an awesome gimmick that makes you wonder why you don't see more tricks like these, making the cinema experience into something really unique you can't find anywhere else.
Sadly, it didn't really work; Clue was a box office bomb and made only $14 million. It's rightfully gained something of a cult following since then as one of the greatest comedies ever, and because the DVD gives you the option to play a random ending, the effect can still be preserved at home. It really does add a lot, but unfortunately audiences at the time just didn't care.
