10 Scariest Horror Movie Scenes From The '80s

7. Cheryl's Possession - The Evil Dead

Evil Dead
New Line Cinema

The Evil Dead is proof that you don't need a massive budget to make an effective horror. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie is renowned for its innovative camera techniques and incredible practical effects. All of this was achieved on an extremely small budget of only $375,000, a true testament to the talent of the filmmakers.

The scene in which we witness Cheryl become fully possessed is a showcase for this talent. As Linda and Shelly play cards, Cheryl, while looking away from the group, begins to correctly read out each card in a progressively more demonic voice.

After doing this she violently turns around, revealing that her face has morphed into something demon-like. The excellent make-up and atmospheric lighting help sell this transformation.

As the scene unfolds and the possessed Cheryl begins attacking the group, her body increasingly changes and becomes more hellish. Her transformation is unsettling to watch as we witness this once normal-looking person become something unrecognizable.

It's an excellent moment and one that displays Raimi's exceptional understanding of horror.
