10 Type-Cast Actors Who Have Much More To Offer

8. Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson has been Hollywood's go-to guy for 'happy-go-lucky kinda cute blonde guy' for the last ten or so years. His collaborations with Wes Anderson initially gained him some critical recognition and his performance in Bottle Rocket is still arguably his finest. His filmography is significantly better than many other of his "Frat Pack" buddies, and his flirtation with action-comedy cinema is admirable if a little misguided, but Wilson appeared to go through a mid-late 00's rut, where he played the exact same character in every single film he appeared in. As anyone that has seen the aforementioned Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, Meet the Parents or Starsky and Hutch knows, he is an enjoyable screen presence, but his career got to the stage where he needed to step up and he didn't. His earlier films showed a very promising actor, but with personal problems and seemingly a willingness just to pick up the cheque, his career was heading nowhere, yet he was still getting good box-office returns. Films like Wedding Crashers, You, Me and Dupree, Drillbit Taylor, Marley & Me and Little Fockers were all horrible films that were more painful than funny, and it seemed Wilson was content to just appear in this kind of trash and ignore the opportunity to seek a different kind of project. Then Midnight in Paris happened: Woody Allen's heartfelt tale of nostalgia resurrected Wilson thanks to its success as one of the most glorious romantic-comedies in recent years, as Wilson basically plays Woody Allen. Wilson finally let go of the limiting stereotype, and here's hoping it stays that way, because he still has a lot to offer to cinema.
