10 Underrated Modern Disney Classics

4. The Three Musketeers

The keys to any Three Musketeers film, at least if you compare all of the versions made up to date, are action and humor. You need to have tons of action because these men are trained swordsmen. They're sworn protectors, loyal soldiers, and men of honor who know how to fight. However, they are also care free spirits who know when to let loose a punchline or two. These two factors you'll see repeated throughout Musketeer lore, no matter who's playing the main four and no matter who's directing. That said, I dare you to find another Three Musketeers movie that's as fun and adventurous as this one. The fact that Oliver Platt, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen (sans Tiger Blood), and Chris O'Donnell are Musketeers is enough to sell this movie's brilliance. If you want to further seal the deal though, then look no further than Tim Curry as the big bad Cardinal Richelieu and supremely underrated baddie Michael Wincott as Captain Rochefort. Both take their villainy very seriously, though Curry is allowed more than a little of his "bad guy who laughs and relishes in his madness" act. And that's just the thing: it works. It all works so well because it knows what to take seriously, and what to play off as a laugh. That's what makes the teaming of actors playing the Musketeers work so well, considering that Sutherland is the stoic, Platt is the goofball, and Sheen gets to vacillate between the two freely. And yes, while this was during the era of "making Chris O'Donnell happen", his D'Artagnan isn't as campy as his Robin (and before you ask, there's no gratuitous laundry being done in this film).
