12 Deeply Disturbed Female Film Characters

10. Margaret White - Carrie (1976)

13.05.2013carrie 2 Poor Carrie never stood a chance at normality - thanks to her Christian fundamentalist mother - Margaret. Piper Laurie was rightly nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Carrie's mother in this film. She is a raving maniac, obsessed with sexual 'sin'. Whenever Carrie is dispatched home from school after having her first period - which totally freaked her out, her mother tells her she has the 'curse of blood'. This is apparently punishment for sin and poor old Carrie gets hauled into a closet to pray for forgiveness. Carrie yearns for a normal social life - to be a free and easy teenage girl like her peers, but her mother is dead set against this happening. After Carrie is invited to the prom, she uses her psychic powers to restrain her mother from preventing her going. This makes her mother even more convinced that Carrie is under a Satanic influence. After Carrie's terrible pig blood humiliation and her retaliatory immolation of the prom, she goes home to bathe herself and find comfort from her mother. By this time, Margaret is completely mad and knifes Carrie in the back. Carrie finishes her mother off in a definitive fashion - psychically commanding kitchen implements to stab her. RIP Margaret White. No more talk about 'dirty pillows'. You are perhaps the most wigged out psycho mommy in cinema history.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
