8. The Girl With All The Gifts
Set in a near-future Britain where most of the population has been wiped out by a fungus-borne zombie virus, The Girl With All The Gifts stars Gemma Arterton as Helen – a teacher tasked with educating a group of semi-sentient zombie hybrid children. Though cannibalistic have retained the ability to think and feel and are being experimented on at an army compound by the cold Dr Caroline Cardwell (Glenn Close) in hopes of finding a cure.
Adapted from Marvel Comics writer Mike Carey’s novel of the same name (which he actually wrote concurrently with the film’s screenplay) and directed by Colm McCarthy of Peaky Blinders fame, it’s a thought-provoking and beautifully shot film that doesn’t skimp on the gore and manages to breathe a bit of fresh air into the over-stuffed zombie apocalypse genre.
Though it didn’t make much of a splash at the box office, it’ll no doubt become known as the feature film debut of talented young newcomer Sennia Nanua who gives a breakout performance as Melanie – the titular girl with the titular gifts whose exceptionally high IQ and ability to (sometimes) control her flesh-hungry urges means she may be the key to a cure.
