15 Biggest Unresolved Plot Holes In Harry Potter
1. The Lack Of Truth Potions In The Justice System
There are several courtroom sessions in the Harry Potter series. In The Goblet of Fire, Harry witnesses the questioning of Igor Karkaroff via the Pensieve, and in The Order of the Phoenix, Harry himself is put on trial for his use of the Patronus Charm. In both cases, the members of the Wizengamot (the wizarding high court) are essentially one massive jury who decide the outcome of the trial.
Truth potions – such as Veritaserum – are simply not used, despite how powerful they are. In The Goblet of Fire, for instance, Barty Crouch Junior reveals everything about his plan and his master’s return whilst under the influence of this potion.
If such a potion was used in the wizarding justice system, trials would be much more efficient and accurate. Indeed, had Veritaserum been used on captured Death Eaters, the Ministry would have found it much easier to round up Voldemort and his followers.
Perhaps there are laws prohibiting the use of magic during trials. But if there are, who imposed such laws, and what was their justification for doing so?
