15 Most Critically Adored Films 2016 - Ranked
11. Things To Come
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100% (91 reviews)
Not only did French director Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest film Things to Come scoop her the Silver Bear Award for Best Director at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, it’s also won star Isabelle Huppert a good few Best Actress nods from the likes of the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association too.
Huppert plays Nathalie Chazeaux, a disillusioned philosophy teacher forced to re-examine her life after her career starts to wane, her husband leaves her and her cantankerous, drama-prone mother dies. That might sound like a run of the mill female midlife crisis movie, but don’t let that put you off: Eat Pray Love this is not. A beautifully shot, wry and poignant exploration of aging and loss featuring a tour de force performance from Huppert, it’s perhaps fairer to call it ‘coming of middle age’ movie than anything else.
