After Joss Whedon spends most of the movie teasing that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is going to be the Avenger to bite the bullet, it turns out we were being set-up for a twist all along. In fact, as Ultron (James Spader) fires at Hawkeye and a young boy he's protecting, it seems like The Worst Avenger's days are numbered...until the dust clears and it turns out that Quicksilver ran in front of the gunfire to shield them. Quickie then says, "You didn't see that coming?" and falls to the floor, an amusingly meta line that's aimed as much at the audience as Hawkeye. Given how Pietro was expected to be a major MCU character, it was pretty shocking, and Whedon's decision to kill him off also meant that audiences didn't have to deal with having two Quicksilvers in two different cinematic universes (the other being Fox's X-Men movies).
