Amongst Pixar’s latest offerings, it’s mostly sequels feeding off the success and popularity of their original films (what number Toy Story movie are we on now?). But Coco is an original creation yet seems to get lost in the mix and is vastly underappreciated. It has every element of what makes us love Pixar – gorgeous backdrops, creative world-building, dynamic and layered characters, a focused storyline with fluid action sequences as well as being potent in both emotional sentiment and clever humour. It also goes one step further by being Pixar’s first proper musical.

Coco is the vibrant story about a young boy named Miguel who has been given raised to hate music because of an ancient feud that happened within their family involving a departing musician. He is transported to the land of the dead after going too far with his rebellious spirit. Within his journey through his new surroundings, Miguel must learn the value of family just as much as his family must learn the incredible power of music.

Like all good films, it's not all pure joy - you’ll need the hankies at the ready for some parts of the narrative. But the journey through Coco is worth it for the inspiring ending which will simply make you feel good about life.
