20. Saw X

Once upon a time, Halloween reliably meant the arrival of a new Saw movie, and though the franchise's recent attempts to soft-reboot itself have largely fallen flat, what a pleasant surprise it is to report that Saw X is... shockingly good.

The first film in the series to receive predominantly positive reviews from critics, Saw X retains the IP's signature focus on extreme gore yet opts for a more character-driven narrative focus than prior entries, finally giving John Kramer (Tobin Bell) the center spotlight.

Set between the original two Saw movies, this tenth installment skillfully, even affectingly fleshes out Kramer's backstory while sidestepping many of the series' most egregious pitfalls.

For a franchise as creatively stagnant as this to finally find an interesting path forward, is nothing short of a seasonal miracle.

Saw X is in cinemas now.
