Who among us doesn't love the Internet rumour mill? What's better than killing time waiting for a movie to be released by gorging on all the fan theories and rumours that may or may not be true?

Even when they're blatant hogwash, they can be hugely fun to read and speculate about, only increasing anticipation as the film's release nears.

And in recent times, these 20 films all had fans whispering about something that, in the end, turned out to be pure baloney.

Perhaps it was the hint of a secret villain reveal, a jaw-dropping plot twist, an unexpected casting choice, or a surprise cameo - to name just a few.

While it was easy to believe some of these rumours, others were so patently ridiculous that it was tough to take them seriously.

But whether you bought them or not, each of them turned out to be total bull in the end.

In most cases we can see why things didn't go this way, but for a few of these movies, these rumours were actually way more interesting than what we ended up with...

20. Sigourney Weaver Is The Secret Villain - The Mandalorian & Grogu

The Mandalorian & Grogu Sigourney Weaver
Disney

The Rumour:

When Sigourney Weaver was cast in The Mandalorian and Grogu and subsequently announced to be playing the rather benign quest-giver character Colonel Ward, many fans suspected they were being hoodwinked.

Why cast an actor of Weaver's repute and popularity to play a nothingburger supporting character?

And so, a rumour started doing the rounds that she would in fact be the film's twist villain - a double agent secretly working for the Imperials.

And even though Weaver stated that she was only on set for a few days, that of course could've been a mere smokescreen to keep her surprise antagonist role under wraps.

The Truth:

Though this definitely would've been a fun rug-pull considering Weaver's tendency to play statuesque heroes, she does indeed play precisely who she appears to be.

And frustratingly - if predictably - it's a part that gives her desperately little to do beyond spout exposition at Pedro Pascal's Mando.
