25 Astonishingly Dumb 21st Century Film Oscar Wins

24. 2018: Dunkirk Wins Both Of The Sound Awards

Beat: Baby Driver, Blade Runner 2049, The Shape of Water and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (both categories had exactly the same line-up; it really makes you wonder why they split this category in two for so many years).

Should've Won: Baby Driver (both awards).

This one is a very similar case to Hugo winning Best Cinematography over The Tree of Life. Dunkirk was an amazing film in terms of sound and normally this wouldn't have been an undeserved win at all; it just so happened that there was a particular film that simply shouldn't have lost these awards.

Baby Driver, an action film synched to music, is a masterwork of sound that few, if any other recent movies compare with. The film itself is hollow, overlong and flatly written but the sound design is virtually flawless, and the film is still worth seeing for that alone.

Dunkirk also beat Baby Driver for Best Editing and that was OK since, as amazing as Baby Driver's editing was, Dunkirk was slightly better in that field but it still feels hard to justify Baby Driver losing both of the Sound Oscars.

Still, as unjust as this was, at least the gong went to the second-best of the nominees instead of, say, the worst of the field. That's better than nothing.
