5 Most Baffling Accents Of Sean Connery

1. Highlander

The number one spot simply has to go to Highlander. There are just so many things absolutely weird and confusing about this film, and I must admit, I love it despite or perhaps even because of that. So here's the deal, Highlander is a film about a race of immortals, quite a great deal of whom seem to originate from Scotland, as suggested by the title of the film. However, of the entire main cast, there is not a single Scot. The main character is in fact played by Christopher Lambert, a French-Swiss-American, playing a Highlander. His sworn enemy, The Kurgan is portrayed by Clancy Brown, an American (who is also the voice of Mr Krabs from Spongebob).

The only member of the cast playing anyone in any way truly important or interesting to the story who also happens to be Scottish is that man again, Sean Connery. So the natural thing to do was to cast him as a Spaniard known as Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez. Make sense? How about if that thickens to Ramirez being a way of hiding the Spaniard's true heritage...of being Egyptian. An Egyptian who pretends to be Spanish, whilst roaming the Highlands of Scotland, and most definitely the most non-Scottish character being played by the only actual Scot in the cast, because Hollywood makes sense. So you'd think this would give Connery a chance to cut his chops at a flamboyant accent to dazzle us all with, wouldn't you? Yeah you guessed it again, he didn't even bother one iota. So we were left with an Immortal Egyptian prancing around the Highlands of Scotland whilst pretending to be a Spaniard, played by the only Scot in the cast, but with the only convincing Scottish accent of the entire film. I guess it was about time Connery's accent was recognised as being authentic for once then...
