7 Actor Replacements In Sequels That Were Actually Awesome

5. Katie Holmes/Maggie Gyllenhaal - Rachel Dawes

katie-maggie-dark-knight Nobody really knows what Katie Holmes is doing in Batman Begins. Seriously. Scientists are baffled about it and everything. Go back and watch the movie and you'll totally know why: she just doesn't seem like somebody who belongs in a movie like that. It's a good thing, then, that the former Dawson's Creek star decided that she didn't want to reprise her role as District law gal and Bruce Wayne love interest Rachel Dawes when it came time for a sequel. I mean, Holmes is fine and all, but does she feel natural to Nolan's universe? Uh-uh. Enter Maggie Gyllenhaal, an actor who seems far more at home in a movie series like this. And whereas it was kind of difficult to believe Katie Holmes could actually have the high-profile job that she's supposed to have in these movies, with Gyllenhaal it felt right - the honed intelligence, confidence and sex appeal just merged to better effect. Still, Christopher Nolan proceeded to off Rachel in The Dark Knight, presumably out of fear that Gyllenhaal would also decide she didn't want to come back for another installment and he'd look like an idiot. The movie that Katie Holmes decided to do instead of The Dark Knight? Mad Money. You've never heard of it? It stars Queen Latifah, which, by the way, was the reason Holmes wanted to do the movie in the first place. She wanted to co-star in something with Queen Latifah. Lower your opinion of Katie Holmes now.
