7 Movie Sequels You Forgot You Wanted
1. National Treasure 3
It has been a whopping 11 years since the last National Treasure and a staggering 14 since the original, and it’s high time fans got what they are crying out for. The films see treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage) and his assistants solve puzzle and raid crypts, all within the context of American history.
With little sarcasm or contrarianism intended, the National Treasure movies are cinematic gems and are the kind of movies which have been lost to the cynicism of modern society. Audiences in the current social and political climate sorely need an unapologetically old school, fun ride of a film.
A third instalment has been said to be in the works ever since the originals achieved over $815 million at the box office and as recently as 2016, star Nicholas Cage told Entertainment Weekly that they’re still working on it. Surprisingly, it’s the script which is holding up any production, as the endeavour to keep the film's adventures based in historical fact has been the main plight. Despite the first two not having the most deeply profound scripts, it’s admirable that the writers want to do any third film justice.
As the franchise is owned by Disney, this may attest to the reason as to why a National Treasure 3 hasn’t come to fruition. Disney need to divide their attentions away from Star Wars or superhero movies, at least just long enough for another Cage outing to be released.
