7 Ways Marvel Has Learned From Its Mistakes

2. Better Worldbuilding

One of the ways Marvel Studios has continued to keep its films original is through world-building. Instead of setting films in a largely grounded world, e.g. Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger, recent successes are set in James Gunn’s quirky vision of space, the exotic Wakanda and the trippy realms of Doctor Strange.

This is one of the most exciting aspects of the newest instalments in the franchise, as fresh visuals are explored that no other franchise can come close to (apart from Fantastic Four, if they could just get it right!). Marvel has put a fun spin on the diverse variety of aliens akin to those in Star Wars, whilst maintaining a superhero feel to each film that acts as a sheen to polish off a quirky concept.

Again, it was Guardians Of The Galaxy that really won studio execs over to this direction to take the MCU, especially when many other superhero franchises were choosing darker tones (and failing disastrously for the most part). Marvel seems committed to its cosmic world, with an increasing number of the Avengers exploring it and interacting with the newer characters in the MCU.

Keeping all the characters grounded in the more realistic world in Phase 1 would have robbed the MCU of some of its most iconic settings and films such as Doctor Strange and the Guardians Of The Galaxy would never have been made.
