8 Best Reimagined Shakespeare Movies

6. Warm Bodies

The Lion King Opening
Summit Entertainment

Of all the reimagined versions of Shakespeare's work on this list, Warm Bodies is perhaps conceptually the most daring. Based on the book of the same name, Warm Bodies takes Romeo and Juliet and thrusts the love story into a zombie apocalypse.

Featuring a central performance from an always brilliant Nicholas Hoult as R, a zombie who who falls in love with a human survivor (a feeling enhanced by the fact he had just eaten her boyfriend's brains), the film soars as well as it does thanks to Hoult's work.

Starting off as a shuffling and groaning corpse, the film employs witty and humorous voiceover from Hoult as he muses on his current situation as a flesh eating monster. Hoult nails the charming naivety of Romeo and is easily the best thing in this film.

Despite versions of Paris and Mercutio in the plot as well, Warm Bodies takes a notable diversion from Shakespeare's story in its action packed third act, featuring a different ending from the source novel as well.

Warm Bodies is an inventive and genre bending take on Shakespeare's most famous work.
