8 Reasons Why Spider-Man Joining The Avengers Is A Bad Idea (For Marvel)

2. It's Only Being Done Now Because Of Civil War

So if this isn't explicitly for money, then what is it for? Given Marvel's ability to tap into fan desires and wants, it happily seems to be to please the audience (which, judging from the reaction, it seems to have done). But that doesn't explain why they're rushing it? Why give Spidey a golden ticket to MCU poster boy so quickly, particularly in the face of the previously rushed flops? Legacy is certainly a big part of it, but the overriding reason has to be Civil War. Spider-Man is very important to the arc on which Captain America 3 (which is shaping up to be Avengers 2.5) is based, the fight between Iron Man and Cap over him a lynchpin of the event, to the point where to not include him cheapens the whole thing. And thus, because that movie is already set for a May 2016 release there's no time to waste. Post-Civil War there's not that much of the story that needs Spider-Man to pop up in. He can swing in to fight Thanos and all that, but it's not essential. His introduction could have been delayed for a post-Infinity War reveal, if only Marvel hadn't spent one of the character's best story-lines already. The real missed opportunity with this is that had they been able to wait, Marvel could have gotten a better deal, buying the rights outright back from Sony when their ongoing Amazing series proved a total bust.
