9 Movies That Get Better The Deeper You Go
1. Donnie Darko
Those who have watched Donnie Darko only once will have had a very weird time. A film that fluctuates between time and space, and one that moves between dimensions as it progresses, the weirdness of Donnie Darko is only superseded by its copious symbolism, rife with religious and cyclical pointers hidden between its impossible timeline.
When the ridiculously named Donald Darko gets an aeroplane engine crash into his bedroom, his life unravels into what could be a severe mental illness or a parallel dimension, one where a freakish looking rabbit haunts him with prophecies of the future. The movie is a complicated one, driven by a time loop that can only be closed by Donnie's actions - but even he doesn't necessarily understand what they are or why as the film plays out.
Digging into Donnie Darko is mind-numbing, but in the best of ways. Trying to piece together how it all functions is an exercise in vain, with aliens, the undead, and intersecting dimensions all coming together in one big mess. It's brilliant.
