Are Fox Remaking The Dark Phoenix Saga As X-Men: Supernova?

Since X-Men: Apocalypse unfortunately disappointed last year, there has been some talk about where the X-Men franchise goes next. Even with a catastrophic reaction to that film, it was never likely to have killed the franchise for years, simply because Fox have to keep making X-Men films or face losing the rights entirely, but there was some discussion about reboots among fans.

But according to one rumour, it looks like a sequel has already been greenlit and will commence shooting as early as May this year. The sequel will apparently be called X-Men: Supernova, which until now was assumed to be the working title of Josh Boone's X-Men: The New Mutants spin-off.

It seems that assumption was incorrect - at least according to the latest release of Production Weekly, which featured two separate X-Men listings, splitting Supernova and New Mutants as separate entities.

The suggestion that there are indeed two X-Men films shooting this year was then seemingly substantiated by production tracking website My Entertainment World, which now features a new listing for X-Men: Supernova and a shoot date of mid-May 2017 in Montréal...

For one listing to appear might be dismissable as an error, but for two separate ones at around the same time to suggest the same film would be way too much of a coincidence. Even if it seems odd that Fox would spread themselves so thin with so many productions in the works at the same time.

But it's worthy of note all the same. And it does fit with Simon Kinberg's work on the sequel's script and the hints that it would be focused on the Dark Phoenix Saga, which was teased heavily in Apocalypse. And you can see why Supernova and phoenix imagery might prick up a lot of people's interest in that respect.

For now, it's unconfirmed, but it would definitely be interesting to see Fox speed the sequel into production, especially with contracts for the major stars of the rebooted franchise to date still yet to actually be worked out.
