Drew Barrymore Takes On HEIST SOCIETY
Producing and possibly directing adaptation of Ally Carter's young-adult novel.
Warner Bros. Pictures have announced that Drew Barrymore will be producing and possibly directing Heist Society; an adaptation of Ally Carters young-adult novel of the same name, the first in a proposed series of books focusing on the double life of a teenage con artist. The franchise opener will be scripted by past collaborator Shauna Cross, who wrote Barrymores 2009 debut Whip It. Barrymore returns to the directors chair a mere 2 years after the release of her roller derby debut, which didnt exactly set the film world on fire - critically average reviews and financially disappointing flick. Yet with Heist Society, Barrymore has landed on a possible goldmine here with the film appealing to a mass teen audience, this could be, dare I say it, the next Twilight, only with more van Gogh than vampires. In Heist Society, Katrina Bishop attempts to ditch her sinful upbringing of cons and corruption to start a fresh at boarding school, yet when she is mysteriously expelled her elusive past comes back to haunt her. Assembling her own crew of teenage thieves and felons she must return a powerful mobsters art collection, which her father has been accused of stealing. The novel contains endless twists and turns and should make for a fun adaptation, if executed properly. Early in March, Barrymore was rumoured to be directing another adaptation, this time Liz Tuccillos How To Be Single yet she may return to the teen genre with Heist Society before attempting a Valentines Day styled rom com. She will next be on the big screen in early January in Everybody Loves Whales another romantic film, Barrymore continuing her seemingly endless love streak. But with Heist Society, has a potentially lucrative franchise at her finger tips.
