49. Mrs. Miniver (1942)
William Wyler's classic drama about an apolitical British housewife trying to keep her family unified during the Second World War is almost pure propaganda, but even so Mrs Miniver never loses sight of the touching family dynamic at its centre.
Constructed to be uplifting and patriotic, Wyler's vision is one of quiet character interactions, thinly veiled political statements, and resounding performances. Some of it may seem dated through modern eyes, but it's tough not to be touched by its historical significance and heart.
