Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ranked Worst To Best

32. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Million Dollar Baby
Warner Bros.

Clint Eastwood's second Best Picture winner, Million Dollar Baby finds him on fine form, bringing to life a drama that seems predictable on paper, but constantly defies expectations to shock and devastate at every turn.

Here, Eastwood stars as a bitter old gym owner who agrees to train Hilary Swank's passionate boxer, and finds himself defeating his demons as she becomes a star.

It sounds simple enough, but Paul Haggis's emotional script, Eastwood's focussed direction, and the increasingly tragic performances of Swank and Morgan Freeman keeps it from ever feeling overfamiliar. Its final twist is still absolutely harrowing, its characters rich with complexities, and we really should talk about it more.
