Nothing else could've taken the top spot. This three-hour fantasy epic is not only commercial cinema at its best, it's a reminder of what cinema can really do. In this case, it'll make you laugh, leave you on the edge of your seat, leave you jaw-dropped and probably make you cry several times.
This truly is a breath-taking experience where every moment of its 200-minute length is important, rich and detailed and it's one of the very few Best Picture winners which fully deserved the award. It really is masterful and as for the criticism of its 45-minute ending, the various endings are still extremely moving and over-length doesn't take away from that.
Although the best of the trilogy remains The Fellowship of the Ring, this is still a thrilling, beautiful and monumentally brilliant ending to what is arguably cinema's greatest trilogy (sorry Star Wars) and few films deserve to top the box office more than this one did.
