Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)

9. Alan Taylor - The Emperor’s New Clothes

In an alternative timeline, Patty Jenkins did not quit the job of directing Thor: The Dark World and this entry would be praising Monster or maybe even Wonder Woman. Unfortunately, this is not that universe and therefore this list now features a movie that no one has ever heard of, from a man who has an awful filmography.

The Dark World’s production is infamous. Rushed pre-production, too many writers, directors dropping out, unhappy actors, injured actors, studio meddling and late reshoots. You name it, The Dark World had it. All that being said, it’s amazing the film wasn’t a complete train wreck. Sure, it’s often voted as the worst MCU movie, but it is far from terrible. Just extremely generic and uninspiring.

The man who eventually ended up behind the camera was Alan Taylor, a prominent TV director who has directed acclaimed episodes of shows like Mad Men, The Sopranos and Game of Thrones. His work on the big screen, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Aside from some unheard-of indies, Taylor’s only real films of note are The Dark World and the truly terrible Terminator Genisys.

So, his best film (out of necessity rather than choice) is The Emperor’s New Clothes. This drama follows the secret history of Napoleon Bonaparte’s escape from exile and failure to reclaim France. The film certainly does have an interesting story and there’s enough charm in the late Ian Holm’s performance as Napoleon to make it watchable. But overall, you’ll forget it even exists by the time you’re done with it.

Kind of like The Dark World, come to think of it.
